Where We Are Now:
Only eight days after landing home from a summer of paddling, Lindsey boarded a flight for a four month study abroad program in West Africa. During her absence, little progress was made on "trip goals." Now home for the semester, the Canadian Waters Research Expedition is back in full swing. Here are our major updates, but feel free to browse the website, we will continue to update it-we have many photos and anecdotes to share.
1). The water quality data has and continues to be processed by us working at the St. Thomas lab. We will present findings at the Geological Society of America annual meeting in Logan, Utah during the week of May 18th, 2011.
2). The Far North Symposium invited us to speak about the trip- from paddling to science- and Luke presented at the Symposium to a crowd of 300 paddler enthusiasts.
3). In March, Luke received a Young Scholars Grant through the University of St. Thomas. The grant provides $4,000 funding for work on the water quality project.
4). A presentation featuring the Canadian Waters Expedition and Lucas Will of The Superior Dream (www.SuperiorDream.com) expedition will occur at the University of St. Thomas St. Paul campus on Thursday, May 5th. The event is open to all, free of charge. Refreshments will begin being served at 6:30pm, speaking will start at 7pm. The presentation will consist of Lucas Will sharing his trip experience and updates, followed by Lindsey and Luke sharing their trip and progress on the water quality study. The building for the campus is called Owens Science Hall, room 150 (also called the "3M Auditorium").
5). The Sun Newspapers published an article on April 15th, 2011 detailing some highlights of the trip and current work. Here is the link to the online version: http://mnsun.com/articles/2011/04/15/headlines/fw_av_fr14canoetrip.txt
Lindsey and Luke continue to seek ways to get the word out on their experience-whether it be via community press, presentations/talks, sharing in the science or paddling communities, or meeting with others who are planning trips of their own. Please contact them if you or your organization has interest in their story.
Lindsey and Luke Thanking all of the people who helped them achieve their goal and live the dream
Trip Summary
On June 6th, 2010, Luke Olson and Lindsey Lee set out on the Rainy River from Fort Frances, Ontario for an over 1500 mile journey north to Hudson Bay, Canada. After 61days, they reached the bay at Churchill, Manitoba. What started out as a just another lengthy canoe trip, their “Dream of Hudson Bay” developed into a scientific research expedition. They became humble students of the Canadian bush, immersing themselves in the world of Sig Olson, canoeing the rivers of the French Voyageurs. At the same time became experienced researchers, conducting a geochemical water quality study which sampled the waterways for human impact indicators. Upon their return, they have continued the baseline water quality study and will present their results at the Geological Society of America's annual meeting in Logan, Utah May 18-21st.
Expedition Mission Statement
The 1800 mile journey was an attempt to learn from two distinct perspectives. First, from that of a scientist, exploring human influences through an extensive transect of priceless waterways. Second, from that of the adventurer, to learn in little ways the life lessons and fundamentals of our native lands.
Objectives
- To travel by canoe through the Rainy River to Lake Winnipeg and north to Hudson Bay at Churchill, Manitoba
- To connect with the spirit of adventure synonymous with the “Canadian Wilderness”
- To conduct a baseline water quality study of an extensive transect of the Canadian Wilderness
- To test a climate change proxy to see how global climate change is affecting the Hudson Bay Watershed
