Lindsey just completed her second summer as a Girl Scout Canoe Guide for Northern Lakes Canoe Base out of Ely into the BWCAW and Quetico and had a wonderful time taking girls 11-18 and family groups on trips all over that beautiful region. If you know a girl over 11 who you think would benefit from a boundary waters trip please feel free to email Lindsey- it is an excellent program for the girls! Luke spent his summer squeezing in good times at the twin cities premier gear store-Midwest Mountaineering- between many adventurous trips. Lindsey and Luke were able to spend 6 days canoeing the BWCAW together- the first time canoeing since the big trip. And guess what- it was so much fun! Thank you again to all who supported us in our original endeavor, we have become lifelong paddlers and continue to share this passion with others.
On February 10th, 2012 Lindsey had the pleasure of presenting to two middle school science classes- one 7th and one 8th grade class. The presentation featured 3 parts- a refresher on basic Geological concepts, what it is like to do science in college (lots of exciting opportunities!) and the canoe trip/water quality study. This was a very fun presentation for Lindsey to give and, in addition to a powerpoint, there were rocks, Lindsey's paddle, a "Medical Geology" textbook, the original trip sponsorship packet and other props passed around. If you are a teacher in the twin cities area, Lindsey (and if Luke is available) would love to share her love of science and paddling in an educational format fitting to your classes' needs.
Only eight days after landing home from a summer of paddling, Lindsey boarded a flight for a four month study abroad program in West Africa. During her absence, little progress was made on "trip goals." Now home for the semester, the Canadian Waters Research Expedition is back in full swing. Here are our major updates, but feel free to browse the website, we will continue to update it-we have many photos and anecdotes to share.
1). The water quality study was presented at the Geological Society of America annual meeting in Logan, Utah during the week of May 18th, 2011. 2). The Far North Symposium invited us to speak about the trip- from paddling to science- and Luke presented at the Symposium to a crowd of 300 paddler enthusiasts. 3). In March of 2011, Luke received a Young Scholars Grant through the University of St. Thomas. The grant provides $4,000 funding for work on the water quality project. 4). A presentation featuring the Canadian Waters Expedition and Lucas Will of The Superior Dream (www.SuperiorDream.com) expedition will occur at the University of St. Thomas St. Paul campus on Thursday, May 5th. The event is open to all, free of charge. Refreshments will begin being served at 6:30pm, speaking will start at 7pm. The presentation will consist of Lucas Will sharing his trip experience and updates, followed by Lindsey and Luke sharing their trip and progress on the water quality study. The building for the campus is called Owens Science Hall, room 150 (also called the "3M Auditorium"). 5). The Sun Newspapers published an article on April 15th, 2011 detailing some highlights of the trip and current work. Here is the link to the online version: http://mnsun.com/articles/2011/04/15/headlines/fw_av_fr14canoetrip.txt Lindsey and Luke continue to seek ways to get the word out on their experience-whether it be via community press, presentations/talks, sharing in the science or paddling communities, or meeting with others who are planning trips of their own. Please contact them if you or your organization has interest in their story. After starting off June 6th, we will be updating a Personal Locater Beacon each day. Everyone is welcome to the send-off party! We are very excited to have all our supporters- friends, family, professors, classmates- coming together for a casual bbq and bonfire. Whether you can only stop by, or are planning on hanging out by the fire till late- we would love to see you! The party will be held at Lindsey's house, located at: 5570 Matterhorn Drive, Fridley, MN 55432.
Guests are welcome to start arriving at 6:30- come by at any time, stay as long as you would like, food will be out and we would be glad to see you before leaving! Hello to all of our friends, family, supporters and those who just happened upon our expedition. We plan to post updates during the trip here, but as we are reaching the final weeks of our planning, feel free check back to see how it is coming along. Also, any comments, suggestions or words of encouragement are also welcome, just click "comment" and leave us a message! Here are just a few highlights from recent weeks/days/hours:
- Sponsors have been in contact with us daily and we are now partnered with some excellent gear companies. In March we were lucky enough to gain the support of Bending Branches, which has provided us with three amazing paddles. Just two weeks ago we picked up our 18ft Prospector from Nova Craft-a beautiful canoe we are confident will stand up to the rigors of the trip to Hudson Bay. Also, this week we should be receiving our water sampling equipment from YSI and will be building the rig that will hold it to the canoe. Check out our "Sponsors" tab for more information! - The Boundary Waters Permit has officially been purchased- we will launch on Sunday, May 23rd from Fall Lake outside of Ely, MN. We are still planning the weekend and when we will have a get together "send off" but we will let everyone know as those details are determined! -This weekend Luke and I will be doing our three- day ~55mile training run down the St. Croix. This will give an opportunity to test many of the logistical pieces of our trip- from the solar panel chargers for our electronics (laptop, GPS, cameras, etc.) to how we are going to handle portages, meals, weather, and so much more! We will be putting up photos if you are interested to know what challenges we faced. |
